Why does drainage matter so much before building a court?

What is the biggest mistake in site prep for a court?

Will site prep uncover extra problems that could change the work needed?
It can. Excavation sometimes reveals buried debris, root systems, or soil conditions that were not visible during the initial evaluation. Does the ground have to be perfectly flat for a court?
No, but it does need to be graded to a precise, consistent slope, usually around 1 percent, so water runs off evenly. Completely flat ground actually causes pooling. The goal of grading is controlled, uniform drainage, not a perfectly level surface.
Can a court be built if my property already has trees or roots nearby?
Yes, but roots within the court footprint must be removed before base work begins, because roots that remain will continue to grow and eventually lift or crack the surface. Trees close to the boundary are assessed during the on-site evaluation to determine whether root barriers or additional clearance are needed.
How do I know if my site can be shaped to the right slope for a court?

Can a court be built on soil that seems soft or unstable?

What actually happens during court site preparation?
The site is evaluated, cleared of topsoil and root matter, excavated to load-bearing soil, graded to the correct slope, fitted with perimeter drains and catch basins, and compacted with a crushed stone base. Each step has to be completed in sequence before the next one starts.
Why does drainage planning matter so much before construction?

Does the ground need to be perfectly flat for a court?
